Probably constructed before 1750, this historic building in West Islip, NY may be the oldest inn to be continually in service on Long Island ~~~ See link at bottom of page for more history information.
Over the past few months, the West Islip community has become aware of plans to develop the LaGrange Inn property. Several hundred people attended an informational hearing, and voiced strong opposition to the current plan - which includes building a Walgreens Drugstore on the property next to a "restored" LaGrange building.

I am a long time resident of West Islip. We need the LaGrange Inn to remain as our landmark. What else do we have in our Hamlet? Surely, someone can step up and help save it from becoming just another piece of commercial property.
As a resident of the community directly behind the LaGrange Inn, I am deeply concerned that a 24-hour Walgreens will significantly degrade the value of what LaGrange means for all of West Islip. It is truly a distinctive "historic landmark" for this terrific hamlet.
As a 30 year resident of West Islip, I object to this ridiculous commercial plan. We do not need, nor did not request this unecessary building, and it will not help our hamlet.
Hmm it sounds like the owners of LaGrange have already signed a four year lease with Walgreens. I quote "Lisa Pace, the West Islip attorney representing Walgreens, was unaware of Barraga’s task force proposal until informed of it by WestIslipTribune.com. She questioned what impact a task force would have given the fact that the drug store chain has a signed four-year lease with La Grange owners." Is this another example of too little, too late? Is it already a done deal, with the owners nailing the coffin closed on West Islips heritage?
IT IS NOT TOO LATE... and it's not a done deal.. This deal all hinges on Walgreens getting approval of the re-zoning. If they don't get this approval they can walk away (which is what most of us want).. Which is why it's so important that this zoning meeting take place in West Islip (something the taskforce is pushing for... they are suggesting the WI High School), and that residents come to meeting and express their opposition.
When meeting date is firm it will be posted on this BLOG! Pass the word to your friends and neighbors!
Everyone in West Islip needs to attend any and all meetings regarding this issue. This affects every citizen of WI. Let's do something positive for our community. Save our heritage and preserve it for future generations. We can make a difference.
